Updating Fuse Blast firmware

Formlabs regularly releases updated firmware to fix bugs and improve functionality. Check your Fuse Blast's firmware to ensure you're always up to date.

As long as the Fuse Blast has an active internet connection, it receives notification prompts about the latest firmware versions available for download.. Follow the prompts and tap Install on the Firmware Update screen to update.

Automatic firmware updates

  1. On the device’s touchscreen, tap the gear icon. The Settings menu opens.
  2. Tap System > Update Firmware. The Update Firmware menu opens.
  3. Toggle the button for Automatic Updates to ON. The toggle turns blue.
  4. The device automatically checks for firmware updates and installs the update when the device is not in use.

Updating firmware

Download the latest firmware version for your Fuse Blast with PreForm, then upload and install the firmware file on the machine. Review the firmware downloads and release notes to learn more about the improvements that come with each version's release.

To update the firmware via PreForm:

  1. Open PreForm.
  2. Connect the Fuse Blast to the computer via Wi-Fi, USB or an Ethernet network.
  3. Click File > Accessories. The Accessory List window opens.
  4. Click the Fuse Blast’s serial name. The Device Details window opens.
  5. Click Update in the upper-right corner of the Device Details window. The Firmware Update window opens.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions to download the latest firmware and then upload the file to the Fuse Blast. To upload firmware, the Fuse Blast must be connected to the computer via Wi-Fi, USB, or an Ethernet network.
  7. The Fuse Blast may automatically recognize that you have sent a firmware update. Tap Continue on the touchscreen to finish the installation.
  8. If you are not prompted to Continue, continue the firmware update manually. Tap Settings > System > Update Firmware.
  9. After the firmware update installs, confirm the system restart on the touchscreen or wait 30 seconds for an automatic restart.

Touchscreen freezes during or after firmware update

If the touchscreen freezes during or after the firmware update, perform a power cycle to restart the Fuse Blast.

To power cycle the Fuse Blast:

  1. Unplug the unit.
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds to ensure a complete power cycle.
  3. Reconnect the power cable to restart the Fuse Blast.

Decryption error / unable to update firmware

If updating via PreForm does not work, manually update the Fuse Blast’s firmware:

  1. Download the firmware file and save it where it can be easily found.
  2. Connect the Fuse Blast to the computer via USB or connect the device to an Ethernet network.
  3. Open PreForm.
  4. Click File > Accessories. The Accessory List window opens.
  5. Click the Fuse Blast’s serial name. The Device Details window opens.
  6. Click Update in the upper-right corner of the Device Details window. The Firmware Update window opens.
  7. If you receive the Error checking for firmware updates notification, click Upload File.
  8. Select the recently downloaded firmware file and click Open.
  9. Click Update. PreForm begins to upload the firmware file to your machine.
  10. Tap Continue on the touchscreen to finish the installation.
  11. If you are not prompted to Continue, continue the firmware update manually. Tap Settings > System > Update Firmware.
  12. After the firmware update installs, confirm the system restart on the touchscreen or wait 30 seconds for an automatic restart.
  13. If the firmware update fails, try updating the firmware via a different network connection. If you were previously connecting the Fuse Blast to PreForm via USB, use an Ethernet cable. If you were previously connecting the Fuse Blast to PreForm via an Ethernet cable, use a USB cable.

Perform a factory reset

If the Fuse Blast is unable to complete an automatic firmware update or displays a decryption failed error message, perform a factory reset and manually update the device using PreForm.

Notice:

A factory reset erases all print job information, custom settings, and diagnostic logs. Upload diagnostic logs before performing a factory reset.

To troubleshoot a decryption error:

  1. Tap the wrench icon to access the Settings menu. Tap System > Factory reset and follow the onscreen instructions to perform a factory reset. The touchscreen displays Factory reset complete before initializing the Fuse Blast.
  2. Update the Fuse Blast’s firmware via PreForm.

If you see this error message repeatedly, contact Formlabs Support or a certified service provider and prepare your Fuse Blast for remote assistance and log collection.

  1. Tap the wrench icon to access the Settings screen. The Settings screen appears.
  2. Tap System. The System screen appears.
  3. Tap Remote Assistance. The toggle turns blue when it is enabled.
  4. Tap the wrench icon to access the Settings screen. The Settings screen appears.
  5. Tap Connectivity. The Connectivity screen appears.
  6. Tap Dashboard Logging. The toggle turns blue when it is enabled.
