Why Choose Alpha Black Resin

Stunning, Precise Parts

Rich, matte color, crisp fine features, and smooth, dimensionally accurate surfaces for parts that are display-ready and fit together.

Blazing Fast

Print speeds average 40 mm/h regardless of part count or size, without compromising reliability.

Engineering-Grade Performance

Exceeds the strength and toughness of ABS-like resins with a 42 MPa ultimate tensile strength and a 36% elongation at break.

Print with Confidence

The Alpha Resin Family uses low-odor components and post-processed parts meet safety requirements for long-term skin contact. Alpha Resins are the first resin printing materials certified for UL GREENGUARD Gold, when printed on Form Studio 1 and using VOC Extractor.

Applications

Form-and-fit prototypes with smooth, dimensionally accurate surfaces for parts that are display-ready and fit together.

Presentation models with beautiful matte surfaces that are safe to wear and handle.

Functional assemblies that stand up to real world use.

Versatile tools, organizers, and replacement parts with exceptionally smooth surfaces and fine detail.

Resin Printing with Confidence

Low VOC Emissions

The Alpha Resins are the first resin printing materials to achieve UL GREENGUARD Gold*, an independent standard certifying low VOC emissions for homes, offices, schools, and other indoor environments. This certification is for the printing process - not just for a final part.

Skin-Safe Parts

Post-processed parts meet requirements for long-term (>30 day) skin contact, in accordance with ISO 10993, meaning they can be used in wearables and high-contact applications.

Minimize Risks

Liquid resin scored as non-skin irritant according to OECD 439, a standard commonly used in cosmetics industry, to minimize the risks from incidental skin contact with resin.

Low-Odor Components

Formulated using low-odor chemicals, ensuring a pleasant printing experience.

FAQ

Alpha Black Resin is a matte black SLA 3D printing resin in the Formlabs Alpha Resin Family. It balances speed and appearance, averaging 40 mm/h print speeds while producing crisp fine features and smooth, dimensionally accurate surfaces. It's a strong fit for display-ready models, form-and-fit prototypes, and functional parts printed on a desktop 3D printer at home or in the office.

Alpha Black Resin is well suited for form-and-fit prototypes, presentation models, functional assemblies, and everyday items like tools, organizers, and replacement parts. Post-processed parts meet requirements for long-term skin contact, so it also works for wearables and parts that get handled often.

Yes. For creators looking for a 3D printer for their home workshop, Alpha Black Resin pairs a rich matte finish with low-odor components and UL GREENGUARD Gold certification for low VOC emissions (when printed on Form Studio 1 with VOC Extractor). That makes it comfortable to use in living spaces, workshops, and shared rooms.

Alpha Black Resin averages 40 mm/h at a 100 μm layer height, regardless of part count or size. Print settings are rigorously tested by Formlabs, so speed doesn't come at the expense of reliability.

Alpha Black Resin sits in the middle of the family, balancing speed and aesthetics. Alpha Model Resin prints at 30 & 50 μm for the finest features and most matte finish, making it best for scale models and figurines. Alpha Fast Resin prints at 150 μm or more for the fastest results, up to 130 mm/h. Alpha Black Resin is recommended for concept models, form-and-fit prototyping, jigs, and fixtures.

The Alpha Resins are the first resin printing materials to achieve UL GREENGUARD Gold, an independent standard for low VOC emissions in homes, offices, and schools, when printed on Form Studio 1 using VOC Extractor. The certification covers the printing process, not just finished parts. The liquid resin also scored as a non-skin irritant under OECD 439, which helps minimize risk from incidental contact.

Yes. Post-processed parts meet ISO 10993 requirements for long-term (more than 30 days) skin contact. This makes them suitable for wearables and high-contact applications.

Wash parts in clean ≥90% IPA or Formlabs Resin Washing Solution to remove excess resin. For the best surface finish, let parts air dry for at least 30 minutes before handling. Post-curing is optional but recommended to reach full strength. Settings are available for Form Studio Wash+Cure, Form Wash, Form Wash L, and Form Cure units.

Alpha Black Resin is designed for Form Studio 1.

Post-Processing

Washing

The foundational step in any SLA post-processing workflow is to remove any excess resin on the surface of the parts through a solvent wash.

Use clean ≥ 90% IPA, or use Formlabs Resin Washing Solution.

For the best surface finish, Formlabs recommends allowing parts printed in Alpha Resins to air dry for at least 30 minutes after washing, before handling.

Curing

Post-curing Alpha Resins is optional, but recommended, for parts to achieve their full strength and functionality. This step completes the chemical reaction initiated during printing, transforming the part from its green state into a fully finished component.
