Understanding Light Processing Unit lifetime (Form 4 and Form 4L generation)
In Form 4 and Form 4L generation printers, the printer’s backlight shines through the Light Processing Unit (LPU) to print. The LPU is a long-life component, and should last at least one year under average use. That lifetime may be closer to three months in a high-volume production environment. The exact lifetime of an individual LPU depends on total light energy that passes through the module, which in turn depends on the number of layers printed, material, and layer height.

The LPU can easily be replaced when necessary. The part is available on the Formlabs Store and instructions are available on our support site. Formlabs will replace any LPU lifetime failure for a Form 4 or Form 4L generation printer within its standard warranty (or active service plan, if applicable). This warranty excludes user-induced damage such as gouges or scratches and printing with Open Material Mode. Using the Print Settings Editor with Formlabs resins does not impact your LPU warranty coverage.
