Form Wash/Form Wash L time settings

Form Wash/Form Wash L time settings

The Form Wash/Form Wash L removes uncured resin from the surface of printed parts by simultaneously soaking and moving them in a solvent. The Form Wash/Form Wash L can be used with isopropyl alcohol (IPA), Formlabs Resin Washing Solution, or tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether (TPM).

Notice:

Always consult the safety data sheet (SDS) from your solvent supplier as the primary source of information for storage and handling.

The table below indicates the recommended times to wash parts printed in Formlabs resins using the Form Wash/Form Wash L. Formlabs updates wash settings periodically with new and improved materials. Download the latest PDF version (English only) and check for updated wash settings when using a new resin or revised formulation.

Note:

When using TPM, wash your printed parts as you would with IPA. Use longer wash times if necessary—some resins will not absorb TPM or swell as much with exposure to the solvent. Refer to the support article Washing prints with TPM for more information about the TPM wash process and the effect of TPM on resins.

Resin Wash time Notes

  • Only wash Alumina 4N Resin in the Ceramic Wash Solution. Do not allow Alumina 4N Resin parts to come into contact with water or IPA, as this will cause cracking.
  • Use a separate wash bucket to prevent loose ceramic particles from adhering to non-Alumina parts.
  • Formlabs does not recommend using Resin Washing Solution to wash parts printed in this resin.

PU Rigid 650 Resin
PU Rigid 1000 Resin
2 minutes
  • Wash parts printed with polyurethane resins in Propylene glycol diacetate (PGDA). Polyurethane resins should not be washed with isopropyl alcohol (IPA), which can react with the printed parts and cause degradation in material properties.
  • Parts can be dipped in an n-Butyl acetate bath for no more than 15 seconds to speed up the evaporation of PGDA.
  • Formlabs does not recommend using Resin Washing Solution to wash parts printed in this resin.

Silicone 40A Resin 20 minutes
  • Follow the instructions in the Silicone 40A Resin IPA sonication wash guide for best results with washing parts printed in Silicone 40A Resin.
  • Alternatively, wash parts printed with Silicone 40A Resin in an 80/20 mixture of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and n-butyl acetate. Do not wash with IPA alone unless following the instructions in the Silicone 40A Resin IPA sonication wash guide.
  • Only use Formlabs-approved solvents with the Form Wash.
  • Only use n-Butyl Acetate/IPA mixture in an unused Form Wash bucket that has not been exposed to other solvents.
  • Once a Form Wash bucket has been used with n-Butyl Acetate, do not switch to pure IPA. Doing so risks compromising the integrity of the bucket plastic.
  • If you notice cracking or crazing on your Form Wash bucket, discontinue use immediately, empty of solvent, and contact Formlabs.
  • Formlabs does not recommend using Resin Washing Solution to wash parts printed in this resin.
Surgical Guide Resin* To ensure that finished parts are biocompatible, follow all part washing notes in the Manufacturing Guide. Maintain separate wash buckets for resins for biocompatible applications.

10 minutes + 10 minutes**
  • Wash parts printed in Tough 1500 Resin in two cycles, preferably using fresh solvent for the second wash.
  • Note: If parts printed with Tough 1500 Resin will be used for skin contact use, parts must be washed with ≥99% IPA in a Form Wash/Form Wash L for 20 minutes. Ambient conditions and part design (for example, thicker walls or areas that can lead to IPA pooling) may require longer dry times prior to post-curing.

Tough 2000 Resin V2 15 minutes
  • For best surface finish, Formlabs recommends allowing parts printed in Tough 2000 Resin V2 to air dry for at least 10 minutes prior to handling or post-curing. You can also use compressed air to speed up the drying process.
  • Formlabs does not recommend using Resin Washing Solution to wash parts printed in this resin.
True Cast Resin V1 5 minutes
  • Wash with IPA or ≥91% ethyl alcohol, then spray with fresh solvent after the wash cycle.
  • Dry with compressed air.

* Wash in IPA with a concentration of 99% or higher to comply with biocompatibility regulations. Maintain separate wash buckets to meet biocompatibility requirements.

** Parts with two wash times require two wash cycles. For the second wash cycle, use clean solvent. The first wash cycle removes the bulk of the resin, while the second cycle fully cleans the parts.

Changing the recommended wash time

Tip:

Observe these best practices for washing prints to achieve the cleanest parts.

Recycling or disposing of used solvent

Refer to the support articles Isopropyl alcohol (IPA), Formlabs Resin Washing Solution, and Tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether (TPM) for more information about safe disposal of used solvent.

Notice:

Do not pour liquid or partially cured resin into drains or dispose of it with household waste. Do not pour solvent that contains dissolved resin into drains or dispose of it with household waste. Safe and appropriate disposal methods of used solvent vary by location.
