Formlabs Announces Integration with Pixologic’s ZBrush
SOMERVILLE, Mass., Jan 6, 2016 – Formlabs, makers of the Form 2 3D Printer, announces its first software partnership with Pixologic, makers of industry-standard digital sculpting and modeling application ZBrush, to radically simplify the 3D printing workflow. Now, character designers can easily convert their digital creations to physical forms.
Formlabs and Pixologic have become important players within the entertainment industry. Early in its history, Formlabs was a favorite among independent filmmakers due to the low cost and ease of use of its hardware. Today, big budget productions like Ant Man and Interstellar have selected Formlabs to help with 3D printed practical effects. In the software realm, Academy Award™ winning Zbrush is the industry standard for digital sculpting, modeling and rapid visualization within the Film, Game and Advertising industries. It has left its mark on countless feature films, such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Godzilla, Jurassic World, and Star Wars Episode VII.
The software integration will feature a custom ZBrush plugin that will take any model from the application’s design environment and transfer it to Formlabs’ Preform software to begin the printing process. Using Formlabs’ new One Click Print functionality, designers can begin printing within minutes.
“At Formlabs we believe that the 3D printing process actually begins with developing powerful, intuitive software,” said Max Lobovsky, founder of Formlabs. “We’re excited to partner with Pixologic for our first software integration.”
“Pixologic has always had strong bonds with the 3D Printing industry, while Formlabs printers have a strong presence in the ZBrush universe as can be seen in our community forum at ZBrushCentral.com,” said Thomas Roussel, Marketing Director of Pixologic. “ZBrush is able to produce the high quality 3D models required by multiple industries such as movies, video games, toys and figurine manufacture, jewelry design and even medical applications. This makes ZBrush the natural choice when it comes to creating high-resolution models and intricate designs for Formlabs printers.
This partnership comes on the heels of the release of Formlabs’ Form 2 3D Printer. The Form 2 boasts a 40% bigger build volume and a 50% more powerful laser than its predecessor the Form 1+. Together these new features allow character designers to print large models with fine detail.
The software integration will be available for download this spring and will function as a plug-in inside of Pixologic’s ZBrush application. A demo of the integration will be on display at Formlabs’ booth at CES 2016 Las Vegas.
