Announcing the Non-Flammable, Next-Generation Formlabs Resin Washing Solution

Washing with the new Formlabs Resin Washing Solution

Introducing the next-generation cleaning solution for resin 3D printed parts, Formlabs Resin Washing Solution. This lower-odor washing solution is non-flammable per GHS classification and cleans as well as isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and can dissolve twice as much resin before becoming saturated, for a lower cost per wash.

“Formlabs Resin Washing Solution is key in my 3D printing workflow. It washes my models completely and I can go much longer without worrying about replacing solvent. It doesn't have a strong smell and isn't a flammability risk, which I appreciate for my small work space.”

Kristine Paxon, Beam Orthodontics

IPA washes well, but, for some users, presents problems including flammability, loss due to evaporation, and a low, 10% saturation limit necessitating frequent IPA replenishment. Other non-flammable solutions, such as tripropylene monomethyl ether (TPM) or third-party solutions, don’t wash as well as IPA or Resin Washing Solution and can come with a hefty price tag.

With Resin Washing Solution, you can now reduce wash replenishing and cost per wash with a part-cleaning solution safe enough for any workspace. Whether you buy from Formlabs or our partners you can now get your resin and washing solution all in one place.

Resin Washing Solution is not compatible with Flexible and Elastic Resins, or resins that require a validated workflow (including Biocompatible Resins). View the complete list of compatible resins here.

Stable and Validated Non-Flammable

Washing with Resin Washing Solution

Resin Washing Solution is a non-flammable and low-odor solution for washing resin 3D printed parts.

Odor and flammability are main concerns with IPA. Resin Washing Solution solves these pain points, with a stable, low-odor chemistry that cleans parts as well as IPA.

"I'm very happy with the results so far. The solution-cleaned prints are the same or slightly better than washes done in IPA. There's little to no odor, but more importantly there's no fumes; the overall work environment is much, much more pleasant without IPA!"

High-Volume Dental Lab

Resin Washing Solution is non-flammable per GHS classification, mitigating storage and environmental health and safety concerns. In circumstances where IPA usage is limited, Resin Washing Solution offers an alternative, allowing users to increase wash throughput without increasing IPA usage, or making it possible to clean parts in any workspace.

Cost-Effective With a Longer Solution Lifetime

Resin Washing Solution has twice the longevity of IPA and minimal evaporation, leading to less frequent top-offs and fewer full changeouts of washing solution. While IPA has a saturation limit of 10%, Resin Washing Solution’s saturation limit is 20%, meaning it can dissolve twice as much resin before becoming saturated.

The increased longevity and reduced wash replenishment of Resin Washing Solution results in lower cost per wash, and less time spent changing washes.

Intuitive Workflow

Formlabs Resin Washing Solution is recommended for use with the Form Wash (2nd Generation) and Form Wash L. A single container of Resin Washing Solution contains five liters, with volume requirements for Form Wash and Form Wash L below.

Volume Requirements
Containers of Resin Washing SolutionRecommended Solution Volume
Form Wash (2nd Generation)2-37 L, 10 L, 14.4 L
Form Wash L4*, 820 L*, 40 L

*With Form Wash L Universal Build Platform Adapter

When washing with Resin Washing Solution, adjustments should be made to the workflow, including a water soak and additional drying time.

Post-Processing Workflow With Resin Washing Solution
  1. Wash part in Resin Washing Solution with the recommended time for your resin. This is unchanged from washing with IPA.
  2. Parts should be soaked in water for 30-60 seconds (no agitation required). Optionally, IPA can be used instead.
  3. For an accelerated dry time, dry the part with compressed air for 30-60 seconds or with a fan for 30-120 minutes. Alternatively, parts can be air-dried for 4-6 hours.
  4. Cure the part in Form Cure, Fast Cure, or Form Cure L according to the recommendation for your resin.

Simplified Sourcing

Resin Washing Solution can be used with Form Wash (2nd Generation) and Form Wash L, including units that have been formerly used with IPA and then cleaned, making it easy to make the switch from IPA to Resin Washing Solution.

Whether you buy directly from Formlabs or our partners, you can now get your resins and washing solution all in one place, for streamlined sourcing.
