What happens when Formlabs retires a material formulation?
What happens when Formlabs retires a material formulation?
Formlabs will give at least three months of notice before retiring a material during which users can still make ongoing purchases. Depending on material popularity, the sunsetting period may be longer than three months to give users more time to transition. When a new version of a material is released, both versions will be sold in parallel for a period of time. In some cases, a material may be retired without a direct replacement available.
If the new version of a material is only supported on the newest generation of printer, the old version of the resin will remain available on the legacy printer generation for as long as the printer is actively supported, or Formlabs cannot support making the material anymore.
Example: Formlabs releases Tough 1500 Resin V2, which is only compatible with Form 4 generation printers.
- Tough 1500 Resin V1.1 is sunset on Form 4 generation printers since it is replaced by a new version.
- Tough 1500 Resin V1 remains on Form 3 generation printers for as long as there is ongoing support for that generation of hardware.
