What are my options for recycling used solvent?

What are my options for recycling used solvent?

General recommendation

For large volumes of solvent, consider using a solvent recycling system, which offers a cost-effective and more environmentally responsible alternative to paying for waste solvent disposal services. The recycled solvent may still have small amounts of contaminants in it.

Solvent recycling systems use distillation and fractionation processes to remove solutes from waste solvents. Recycling solvent reduces waste disposal costs, emissions that are required to produce solvents, and the cost of purchasing solvent.

Note:

Formlabs does not manufacture or sell solvent recycling systems. Before purchasing a solvent recycling system, ensure that it is appropriate for your chosen solvent and the installation environment.

IPA

Spectra Photopolymers (owned by Formlabs) uses the CBG Biotech SolvTrue™ S1500 Solvent Recycler. Refer to the Recycling IPA for 3D Printing guide for more information on the solvent recycling process as well as the manufacturer's information.

TPM

At this time, Formlabs has no specific recommendations for choosing a recycling system for TPM.

Safety

If you opt for a solvent recycling system, especially for recycling flammable chemicals like isopropyl alcohol, follow safety and compliance protocols for storing large amounts of solvent on-site. Furthermore, ensure your building and fire codes are being followed, your employees are trained to use the solvent recycling system and that they know the emergency procedures.
