BioMed Amber Resin

Medical-Grade Material

Leverage a material manufactured within our Quality Management Systems, with strict adherence to ISO 13485.

Biocompatible and Sterilizable Parts

Testing conducted by Formlabs for common use cases is intended to instill confidence that this material is suitable for biocompatible applications.

Semi-Transparent

Visibility through parts allows light to pass through.

Excellent Definition

Produce parts and assemblies with complex designs and geometries.

Applications*

Use BioMed Amber Resin for producing rigid, transparent parts for point-of-care and medical manufacturing applications requiring biocompatibility.

*Unlike Formlabs Dental Resins, no intended uses are provided for BioMed Resins. Material properties may vary based on part design, manufacturing practices, and other methods. It is the manufacturer’s responsibility and its respective customers and end-users to determine the biocompatibility and performance of all printed parts for their respective application and use. To instill confidence in potential users, Formlabs has tested biocompatibility and sterilization compatibility for common use cases and manufactures BioMed Resins in an ISO 13485 certified facility. We can offer representative examples of what customers have done with our products and the supporting documentation we make freely available.

1 Material properties may vary based on part geometry, print orientation, print settings, temperature, and disinfection or sterilization methods used.

2 Data for post-cured samples were measured on Type IV tensile bars printed on a Form 2 and Form 3B (impact and thermal measurements) printers with 100 µm BioMed Amber Resin settings, washed in a Form Wash for 20 minutes in 99% isopropyl alcohol.

BioMed Amber Resin was tested at NAMSA World Headquarters, OH, USA.

Post-Processing

Washing

BioMed Amber Resin may be washed using either a Formlabs-validated wash unit (1) or an ultrasonic wash unit (2).

The foundational step in any SLA post-processing workflow is to remove excess resin on the surface of the parts through an alcohol wash. Please refer to the material's manufacturing guide/IFU for washing instructions.

FAQ

BioMed Amber Resin is a strong, stiff, translucent SLA material designed for biocompatible applications requiring long-term skin contact (more than 30 days) or short-term contact with bone, tissue, dentin, and mucosal membranes (less than 24 hours). It is intended for producing rigid, transparent parts for point-of-care and medical manufacturing applications where both performance and biocompatibility are critical.

BioMed Amber Resin is manufactured in Formlabs' FDA-registered facility in Ohio. Production takes place inside a certified ISO Class 8 clean room, within a Quality Management System that is ISO 13485 and EU MDR certified. All Medical Device Resins are appropriately registered with the FDA and CE marked according to the EU MDR.

Unlike Formlabs Dental Resins, no specific intended uses are provided for BioMed Resins. It is the manufacturer's responsibility, along with its respective customers and end-users, to determine the biocompatibility and performance of all printed parts for their specific application and use. Formlabs has tested biocompatibility and sterilization compatibility for common use cases and makes supporting documentation freely available to help instill confidence in potential users.

BioMed Amber Resin offers an Ultimate Tensile Strength of 73 MPa, a Flexural Strength of 103 MPa, a Flexural Modulus of 2500 MPa, a Young's Modulus of 2900 MPa, an Elongation of 12%, a Shore Hardness of 67 D, a Notched Izod of 28 J/m, and a Heat Deflection Temperature of 78 ºC at 0.45 MPa. Note that material properties may vary based on part geometry, print orientation, print settings, temperature, and the disinfection or sterilization methods used. You can download the full Technical Data Sheet from the Formlabs data sheets page.

BioMed Amber Resin is well suited for end-use medical devices, surgical cut and drill guides, implant sizing models, and specimen collection kits. Its semi-transparent appearance allows light to pass through parts, which is valuable in applications where visibility through the component is needed.

The material is tested and documented for long-term skin contact and short-term contact with bone, tissue, dentin, and mucosal membranes. It is not positioned for implantable applications. Users must independently determine the suitability of printed parts for any specific use.

BioMed Amber Resin is compatible with the Form 4B, Form 4BL, Form 3B, Form 3BL, and Form 2. Compatible tanks include the Form 4 Resin Tank, Form 4L Resin Tank, Form 2 LT Tank, Form 3 Resin Tank V2.1, and Form 3L Resin Tank V3.

The foundational post-processing step is an alcohol wash to remove excess resin from part surfaces. BioMed Amber Resin may be washed using either a Formlabs-validated wash unit or an ultrasonic wash unit. Detailed settings and instructions are available in the BioMed Amber Manufacturing Guide. Formlabs Form Wash or Form Wash L units are designed to integrate with this workflow.

Yes. For biocompatible materials, post-curing is necessary to achieve the safety standards determined by regulatory agencies. Specific curing settings and procedures are outlined in the material's Manufacturing Guide. Form Cure or Form Cure L units from Formlabs support this step.

Yes. Parts are compatible with common solvent disinfection and sterilization methods. Formlabs has tested sterilization compatibility for common use cases. Refer to the Manufacturing Guide and the Safety Data Sheet for validated protocols and full details.
